The glorious period in the history and life of Niš (Naissus - Roman variant of its
name) commenced in the beginning of the 4th century when Constantine (Caius Flavius
Valerius Constantinus) ascended to the throne of Roman Empire. This emperor born in
Naissus on February 26th 280 AD under the sign of Pisces during his thirty years long
reign (306–337) visited his hometown couple of times but he decorated it magnificently
with majestic and luxurious public buildings of profane and sacred character. During first
decades of the 4th century in the town were active the workshop for production of military
equipment (fabrica armorum) and officina for production of silver vessels. As a powerful emperor,
Constantine did not forget his birthplace. He erected a majestic residence in one of the luxurious suburbs of ancient Niš - Mediana,
where he resided and attended to state affairs. |
